First Words

So you all know I love Jude, right? Well, I have a pretty bad confession to make…I can’t remember what his first words were. Obviously mumma and dadda ranked pretty highly but apart from that, I don’t remember what he first said to me. As a toddler, Jude was always more of a singer and could hum several of his favourite nursery rhymes perfectly in tune but as for words…I’m sorry I haven’t a clue. I’ll ask my mum because her memory is (rather alarmingly) much better than mine for information like this. The worst thing is, he didn’t speak until he was four or five so it’s not even that long ago in terms of my lifetime and I still can’t remember!

Elsa’s first word was “cat” or more like “tat” but it eventually became cat and her next word was, incredibly appropriate for Little Miss Attitude, “no“. She learnt to speak pretty early on and was stringing a few words together by eighteen months. I remember very clearly one of her first sentences was “do it myself” – I’m not sure I’ve ever met a stronger, more independent girl than Elsa so this wording shouldn’t be much of a surprise to me.

Then there is Emmeline, well she’s still developing her speech but at the moment she tries to say cat (comes out as “tat“) “birr” (bird) and “nana” (banana) but the best of all is this one…I know most of you have seen this video already but clearly I have a shocking memory so need it a bit further embedded in my brain that her first attempt at a word was, rather randomly, “melon.”

Elsa and Emmeline are so so similar, it’s uncanny sometimes and really makes me laugh at the traits they share such as an unwavering determination and independence to learn. It’s pretty funny that they share a first word in “tat.”  I wonder if Emmeline will choose a similar first sentence to her big sister.

I was looking up articles on baby’s first words and I came across a list of some of the more unusual choices. Words such as:

  • Turtle
  • Banana
  • Shoe
  • Gecko
  • Quack quack
  • Squirrel
  • No

What a bizarre selection!

So I was wondering if you had any good first words from you or your children? I have no idea what my first word was but hopefully my parents will let me know when I next speak to them. I’ll let you know what they say.

I’d love to hear what your children have said to you, either first words or first sentences. A x
